<item><title>Union Furnace Holds Family Night</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1242</link><pubDate>Thu, 16 Feb 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[Union Furnace Elementary had a wonderful family literacy night in December. The students boarded the train, and Board Member Corby Leach kicked off the evening reading The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. Then students and their families traveled through four stations to create items related to the book.<break> At one center, students practiced their writing skills to compose a letter to Santa. Another center helped with their math skills, as they identified symbols from the book and graphed them on paper, then answered questions about the graph. Another center helped students follow directions as they created a candy cane reindeer ornament. Finally they created jingle bell necklaces and enjoyed hot chocolate<br />
and cookies. <br />

The book fair was open to promote reading and help parents shop for the holiday. The event<br />
was very well attended with over 150 people.]]></description></item><item><title>Snow At Union Furnace?</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1266</link><pubDate>Mon, 09 Apr 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[The UF Students requested Snow, but it wasn’t meant to be.  Since we didn’t have any snow days, we decided to plan a snow day here at school.   We watched "the snowman."  For our science activity, we made snow out of Instasnow. For reading, we read books and created snowmen.  For PE, we threw toilet paper snowballs and made snowmen in the gym.<break>  For math, we played bingo (we also used sight word bingo.)   In music, we learned folk dances.  The students had a wonderful time, and didn't even realize they were learning!]]></description></item><item><title>Union Furnace Wins Award</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1287</link><pubDate>Tue, 01 May 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[The Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators announced that Union Furnace Elementary in the Logan-Hocking Schools is a winner of the 2012 Hall of Fame School Recognition Award.<break>  Principal Lisa Frasure and her staff will be presented with the award at an Awards Luncheon on June 20, 2012 during the annual OAESA Professional Conference. OAESA will recognize four elementary Hall of Fame schools during the 2012 Awards Luncheon.<br />
<br />
The finalists were selected from nominations from across the state.  The school staff submitted extensive written documentation substantiating the quality of their educational program in the following areas: Instructional System, Student Achievement, Student Development, Personnel, Administration, School Management, and Stakeholders.<br />
<br />
Hall of Fame Award winners were chosen by two committees of principals; one of which read and scored the applications and the other conducted on-site evaluations of the schools.  The four winning Hall of Fame schools represent the finest schools in the state of Ohio.]]></description></item><item><title>UF PTO Publishes Cookbooks</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1288</link><pubDate>Thu, 03 May 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[Union Furnace Elementary School Families have collected 250 of the best recipes from staff, families and friends and compiled them into a great keepsake cookbook.<br />

<br />
Mr. Irvine shared with the children the importance of the local government, his duties and facts about elections.  Mr. Shaw explained what his role with the city government is and how he plans for the city.  Mr. McManaway described what his daily schedule entails and what his job is like as deputy sheriff.  <br />
<br />
The children enjoyed this hour and a half question and answer session with the three men. ]]></description></item><item><title>UF Named OAESA Hall of Fame School</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1315</link><pubDate>Fri, 22 Jun 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[Union Furnace Teacher Debbie Mohney and Principal Lisa Frasure attended the OAESA Awards Luncheon on June 20, 2012.<break><br />
<br />
Some of the things that were noted by the team that conducted the visit were:  "The students and principal respect and care about each other!  The teaching and support staff really value and cherish their young learners.  Union Furnace staff understands value and use data to make decisions.  They are lifelong learners as they continue the journey with the new common core standards and more frequent formative assessments.  The working relationships among the staff can easily be seen.  The students are very proud of their school and they are the first to tell you so.  This is a community where the school is the heart.  This Hall of Fame school is a perfect example of how the principal, staff and everyone who has a role in the positive functions of this school are America's future." <br />

]]></description></item><item><title>UF Students Enjoy Land Lab</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1346</link><pubDate>Tue, 09 Oct 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[On Friday, October 5, students from Union Furnace Elementary participated in a field trip known as Land Lab.  Here, students engaged in a variety of authentic learning activities set in nature.<break>  Students had a chance to explore the area and search for various signs of wildlife, examine a sample of pond water for different types of species, and learn about adaptations such as camouflage.  In addition to the many wonderful volunteers that helped lead student groups, we had other outside organizations including Alley Park, Clear Creek Metro Park, and the Logan Public Library help make the event a success.  Students were treated to a beautiful day and a good time was had by all.  ]]></description></item><item><title>UF Hosts Veteran's Day Assembly</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1375</link><pubDate>Wed, 14 Nov 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[Union Furnace Elementary School hosted their second annual assembly honoring local veterans, on Friday, November 9, 2012.    The assembly was led by a group of fourth graders and included the pledge of allegiance, songs, a short video, and poetry.   Veterans were recognized and given cards as tokens of appreciation.<break>  <br />
<br />
Eleven veterans and their families were present at the assembly.  The veterans stayed for a question and answer period immediately following the assembly with the fourth grade students.  Sgt. Travis reported that it is the “Past, Present, and Future” generations of veterans that keep him motivated to be in active duty today.  Veteran Ron Castle explained to the students that not all countries “value life” as Americans do and that they should be very thankful for their freedoms.  Jack Breakiron, shared with the children that they are very fortunate to live in the USA where they have running water, electricity, and basic services.  He went on to say that it is truly a blessing to live in the USA.  <br />

Local veterans attending the assembly were, Ron Castle, Joe Webster, Chad Anderson, Ken Frazier, Bob Blackstone, Rick Russel, Beverly Lawrence, Richard VanSickle, Matt Sargent, Adam Dick, Jack Breakiron, and Matt Travis.<br />
]]></description></item><item><title>Project Safe Food Drive</title><link>http://loganhocking.k12.oh.us/news.php?article=1403</link><pubDate>Fri, 21 Dec 2012</pubDate><description><![CDATA[The Project SAFE team at Union Furnace Elementary recently held a food drive.  The event began December 10th and concluded on December 20th.  During that time, students at the school were encouraged to donate canned and boxed food goods such as macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, and canned vegetables.<break>  The donated goods were then turned over to the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, which serves Hocking and the surrounding counties.
