High School teams across Ohio participated in this competition yesterday in hopes of advancing to the regional events. In addition to Logan High School, two teams competed from Pickerington Central High School and a team from Carver Community Center in Chillicothe.<break>

In this year’s case, a college freshman was accused of stealing prescription drugs while attending two real estate open houses and while visiting at the houses of two friends. The Defendant and his parents’ names were on a sign-in list at both of the open houses. Without a warrant, the Police Department subpoenaed and obtained defendant’s cell phone GPS records, then arrested him. Defendant filed a motion to suppress, claiming that the evidence was the result of an improper search and seizure that violated his 4th Amendment rights. The Prosecution argued that no 4th Amendment search took place with regards to his GPS records and that defendant waived his rights via the cell phone contract, which allowed the disclosure of such records upon a request from law enforcement.

The Logan team consisted of Katie Hosler and Nathan Wallace (assistant prosecutors), Dylan Blake and Bailey Simons (defense attorneys), Paige Ludwin (witness for the cell phone company), Laikyn Lovas (detective in the investigation), Kierstin Conaway (telecommunications engineer), Laurel Frasure (privacy rights advocate) and Brenna Gates (bailiff/timekeeper).

Legal advisors for the team were attorneys Jason Sarver and Kyle Henderson. Brett Seimer was the high school team’s faculty advisor.

In the morning session, the Logan team’s defense went first presenting their case against Pickerington’s Blue team. Dylan Blake, a returning member from last year’s district winning team, was awarded the Best Attorney Award. Kierstin Conaway, a freshman at LHS, was awarded the Best Witness Award. In the afternoon session, the team’s prosecution presented their arguments against Pickerington’s Red team. Paige Ludwin, a third year participant in the program, was awarded the Best Witness Award. Overall, Logan placed a very close second in the competition while Pickerington’s Red Team advanced to the Regional Competition.

After having coached the team for the last four years, Attorney Jason Sarver stated, “we have had such great support for this program that we have come to expect success from our students. They did great this year. Despite having five freshmen on this team, we won three of the four available awards. Hopefully, these freshmen stick around so that we can advance beyond the District Competition for the next three years.” Attorney Sarver thanked Attorney Kyle Henderson and Brett Seimer for their support for the program as well as the other local volunteers who took time out of their busy schedule to support this annual event.

Jason Sarver acknowledged, “we are even seeing some of these students return to Hocking County as applicants to take the Bar Exam to become real attorneys. All of them reflect fondly on their experiences in their high school mock trial programs.”
Originally set for Saturday, Feb. 11, the tournament was pushed back two days due to the snowy travel conditions that were present Saturday morning.<break> Although wrestling in a tournament on a Monday night is not an ideal situation, both the Varsity and Middle School grapplers were able to outscore league rivals Gallipolis, Chillicothe, Jackson, and Warren to bring the year’s first SEOAL titles to Logan.

The Jr. High wrestlers dominated the field by winning nine individual championships out of 16 weight classes on their way to victory. Wyatt Garren, John Groves, Scott Allen, Joey Bolin, Bryce McBride, Tommy Hayden, Billy Woltz, Josh Rardain, and Brandon Skinner all won their respective weight classes. The final team standings were the following: Logan 308, Chillicothe 178, Gallia Academy 173, Jackson 112, Warren 38.

Although the Middle School wrestlers were able to outscore second-place Chillicothe by 130 points, the Varsity team race was much tighter, at least at the top of the field. In the varsity tournament Logan won the championship by scoring 271 points, and three-time defending champs Gallia Academy finished a close second with 263. Rounding out the field were 3rd place Chillicothe with 121, 4th place Warren with 106, and 5th place Jackson with 95. Josh VanBibber, Sean Wotring, Caleb Branson, and Michael Fortner all won individual SEOAL titles in their respective weight classes.

Poetry Out Loud Contest Results

Emily Evans, a junior at Logan High School, recently earned the top spot at the Logan High School’s sixth annual Poetry Out Loud contest held on February 7th.
LHS senior and Advanced Placement Studio Art student, Michael Geiger, went one step farther. Michael, who has already broken school records for having pieces exhibited in the show for the past two years, topped himself with another record-breaking year.

According to Rita Jones, LHS Fine Arts Department chair, Michael had two pieces tagged for this year’s show.

“But wait, there’s more! One of Michael’s works, a mixed media/oil painting entitled “Pride and Joy” was selected as one of the top twenty-five pieces of art in the state.” Jones announced.

In addition, Bailey Johnson claimed her spot as the second most “winningest” LHS artist, with the selection of one of her 2012 submissions for the show. This is the second year Bailey, a junior, had artwork displayed in the exhibition.

The works of two other students, Alex Flowers and Abbie Hughes, were also selected for display.

“Alex’s piece will be included in the OGYAE main show at the State Office Tower, while Abbie’s will go to the Ohio Department of Education Cameo Show,” Jones pointed out.

“To comprehend the breadth of these four young artist’s accomplishments, one must realize that these pieces were selected from a field of over 12,000 entries submitted to 15 regional judging across the state. Out of the regional judging almost 3,000 works emerged for review by seven primary judges at the state competition. Those judges, all college educators, narrowed the field down to the final selection of just 300 works of art,” she observed.

“Southeastern Ohio Region 15 had only six pieces selected for the show and five of those six were ours.”

“We are all bursting with pride over the successes of our students, but I am particularly proud of the accomplishments of my colleague, Jeremy McAfee. Over the past several years I have watched as the quality of young artists emerging from his foundation art classes (Art 1 and 2) has grown. This year’s success is evidence enough,” Jones commended.

“I would also like to thank the Logan-Hocking community, the LHS staff and our administrators for their continued support of the Arts and for understanding the importance of the art education of our students,” she concluded.

Thad Ricker, OGYAE Exhibition and Coordinator echoed her sentiment saying,
“It is with great pride that we exhibit these students’ artworks at The James A. Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus. The exhibition is a testament to the high quality of visual arts education that exists in our state. It is vital that the community understands the value and importance of art education, and the impact that it has on our young people. We hope that this exhibition fosters the understanding, through both its visual and textual displays. We are fortunate that Ohio is a state in which the arts and arts education are supported by community and educational leaders, legislators, colleges and universities, civic organizations, and businesses. Without the support and encouragement of these groups, the achievements of these young artists might go unrecognized.”

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition will open for viewing at the James A Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus on Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. The Exhibition will remain on display until May 17, with weekday hours only, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The public is cordially invited to attend and join these outstanding and talented students from Ohio’s high schools, to salute their creative expression in the visual arts. The exhibition is a cooperative effort between the Governor of Ohio, the Department of Education, colleges, universities and corporate sponsors.

A special Awards ceremony will be held to honor these artists, prior to the official opening of the show, at The Riffe Center Capitol Theatre at noon on Saturday, April 14.

FIRST® Tech Challenge is a robotics competition for high school students based on a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building and programming their robots to compete as alliances against other teams.

Teams advance from local qualifying tournaments to state championship tournaments, before advancing to the World Championship Tournament, held each year in St. Louis, Mo.

At the competition, Logan competed against approximately 70 teams from both Ohio and Pennsylvania, however they were the only team from Southeastern Ohio.

Each year the details of the competition are different. In the past, robots have played soccer, collected inner tubes and traversed obstacle courses. The exact objectives for the upcoming year were held secret until January 7th. This year the objective is to collect basketballs, negotiate obstacles, and to shoot the balls into basketball hoops.

The bell, Number 2394, was cast in steel by Naylor Vickers & Company of Sheffield, England, in 1861, the same year that the original Logan High School opened its doors on North Street. The bell resided on the Hilltop through the construction of a new building in 1910 and renovations in the 1950s until the old high school was demolished in 2008 and a new high school was built at a different location on state Route 328.<break>

Great care was taken to preserve a number of historic items from the old high school after the demolition, including the bell. It was stored at the Logan-Hocking School District’s bus garage until Logan alumnus Fred Durant, Class of 1941, addressed the school board about finding a new home for “an old friend.”

“The school board formed a bell committee to look at how to preserve and refurbish it,” Paul Shaw, school district treasurer, said. The bell was moved to the warehouse at the school district’s new administrative office on East Front Street in the meantime.

The bell committee — consisting of Jeff Daubenmire, former director of instruction, and community members Jean Ann Black, Jeanette Schorr Frazier, Rudy and Betty Rempel and Fred Durant as an ex-officio member — researched and had the bell restored. A monument for the bell was designed by VSWC Architects of Mason. It was constructed by LHSD Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Keith Brown and his maintenance staff at the old Logan High School site, where Central Elementary was constructed after the high school’s demolition.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the bell, monument and plaque to be placed on the monument were dedicated at the Alumni Day festivities at Logan’s Worthington Park. The sketch on the plaque was created by Paul “Eli” and Otto “Ottie” Shaw, and the plaque was crafted by MD Designs by Metal Décor of Springfield, Ill.

The monument is dedicated to all the students and staff of the bell’s era.

“As we see the bell, memories of our days in high school will probably return,” School Board Member Ed Penrod said during the dedication ceremony. “Thanks to all who have recognized the value of a Logan High School bell monument. Thanks to Fred Durant, who brought it to the attention of the Logan-Hocking Local Board of Education. Thank you for those who served on the bell committee. And finally, thank you to those in attendance for sharing this piece of history, tradition and legacy.”

Durant clearly recalls the days when the bell was rung on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” for Armistice Day — now known as Veterans Day — which commemorated the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany.

“When I was in second grade and before that, when it was Armistice Day we would face the east and at 11 (a.m.) we would ring all the bells and whistles in Logan; Logan Clay and the brick plant would all ring their bells. I remember [the bell at the old high school] was outstanding. You could hear it plain above all the other bells,” he said. “It has a very nice sound.”

Two consecutive minutes of silence were observed. The first minute was for the roughly 20 million people who died in the war, and the second minute dedicated to the living left behind. The Logan High School bell monument also is to be a reminder of the price paid for our country’s freedoms.

Durant said he is pleased with the accommodations the school district has arranged for the bell.

“It’s the only thing some people have to remember the [old high school] by,” he said.

Additional plans are being made to add an iron rod gate or fence around the bell, which is lit up at night.

“It’s not quite done yet, but we’re making progress,” Shaw said. “It will look really nice when it’s finished.”

The school district is interested in any stories about the bell the community might like to share. The district’s administrative office can be reached by calling (740) 385-8517.

LHS & LHMS Class Schedules

Logan High School, and Logan Middle School class schedules for the 2012-2013 school year will be mailed home on Monday, August 13th.

FFA Participates in Officer Retreat

Eleven members of the Chief Logan FFA officer team, along with advisors, Andrew DeLong, Jeremy Grove, and two guests, participated in the 2012 FFA officer retreat.<break> They started it off with a canoe trip down the Hocking River. The counselors will be meeting with the seniors in groups and individually to discuss the process for furthering one’s education; however, there are things seniors and parents need to be doing this fall.<break>

Seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend college fairs. These fairs provide students and their parents the opportunity to meet with representatives from 4-year and 2-year colleges, technical schools, and branches of the armed forces as well as bank representatives, who provide financial aid information. Applications and brochures may also be picked up at these fairs. Ohio University/Lancaster will host a college fair from 6:30 p.m till 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20th. There is also a college fair for students with learning disabilities at Gahanna Lincoln High School on Tuesday, October 2nd, from 6:30 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.

The Logan High School senior seminar class will be visiting a college fair at Hocking College on September 18th. Also, Guidance Counselors will begin working with seniors on the college process. Applications are to be completed in the fall. As part of the application process, it is highly recommended that parents and students make college visits. Students or parents may contact the admissions office in order to arrange a visit.

Throughout the school year, representatives from various schools will be at the high school to meet with seniors in their senior seminar class. A tentative visitation list includes representatives from Hocking College, Ohio Northern, Shawnee State, Tiffin, Otterbein, Wilmington, Capital, Ohio State and the University of Rio Grande.

Many colleges require entrance exams that should be taken this fall. The next ACT test is October 27th, with a September 21st registration deadline. Students are to apply online at www.actstudent.org

Seniors will be receiving a bulletin from the guidance office every month or two. The bulletin will also be available on the school website at www.loganhocking.k12.oh.us Once on the website, click on departments, then go to school counseling, then to Logan High School. The site also offers helpful websites and resources for college and career searching.
Dressed in scarlet and gray, Buckeyeman drew attention to himself as soon as he stepped out of his vehicle. He came to Logan to meet with students to present on the state tree and the seemingly worthless nut that falls from it.<break>

Lokai, a former Agricultural Education instructor began his day by meeting with the Animal Science & Technology classes where he provided each with their own buckeyes to actually plant themselves. Next spring, all of the students will have their own tree starts to take home and plant. In the midst of all of the planting and conversations, he provided many trivia questions with buckeye necklace prizes for those winners.

The Natural Resource class most certainly learned that day as Lokai provided more information concerning the differences between the buckeye varieties and how to care for a buckeye tree. Currently, this class is studying forestry management practices which worked right in with what Buckeyeman was speaking on.

Never having planted but ‘nature’s way,’ the students at Logan have conducted an experiment for Lokai. He has never grown any of the 1000 trees he’s planted in a greenhouse. The students will be observing the shiny brown seeds for the next few weeks as the seeds will sit in the greenhouse with proper watering and sunlight. By December, they are to provide a report discussing the success or failure of this scientific experiment.

Following the Natural Resource class, Buckeyeman continued his trek across Hocking County where he stopped at Central Elementary. Here, he visited nearly every classroom and the cafeteria. This was certainly a sight for the elementary students as they heard Principal Courtney Spatar begin the “O-H!” chant.

Hocking County is home to the second largest Yellow Buckeye tree in the state of Ohio. No visit would be complete for Buckeyeman unless he had a picture taken next to it! Logan Tree Commission representative Rick Webb met with Lokai at the tree for a quick photo-op just before meeting with some OSU Alumni at Pizza Crossing.

Needless to say, the students had quite a unique experience on Thursday. Not only did they meet a crazy nut who passionately champions The Ohio State University and agriculture, but they will enjoy their own tree for many years to come. The saying is “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree,” the same goes for Buckeyes!
Mayor Irvine, Dr. Susan Rinehart and Christy Bosch selected the winners from over 25 entries. During lunch periods, the students were treated to a tailgate style lunch featuring a picnic menu and a sundae bar. Rockin’ Reggie, from Health Recovery Services, provided music and various contests giving away several prizes.<break>
To cap off the week, LHS hosted its’ first ever outdoor pep assembly in the new stadium. Beyond the Bell provided a special guest during the assembly when a skydiver landed on the 50 yard line and cheerleaders began throwing T-shirts to the student body. The pep assembly ended with the seniors winning the traditional spirit stick contest.
Jeremy Grove, Logan High School agricultural education teacher was one of three ag biotechnology grant recipients after he participated in the ag biotechnology academy in August.<break> The academy, sponsored by DuPont Pioneer and the OSCF, brought together 26 teachers from across the state to learn how to incorporate ag biotechnology into high school agriculture and science curriculums. Teachers were able to apply for the ag biotechnology grants following the academy.

The funds will be used to purchase science lab equipment that will enhance the school’s current agriculture science lab and will give students additional opportunities for advanced science experiments.

"Now is an exciting time to be in agriculture. It is no longer strictly farming in this industry because of the many advances in technology,” said Grove. “It is my hope that this grant will be a catalyst, encouraging students to pursue a career in agriculture. The biotechnology equipment will provide an awesome opportunity to experience the technology being used to solve our number one issue of feeding nine billion people by 2050. Both the students and I will need to question, experiment, and learn together, but isn't that what education is truly about?"

“Funding for the ag biotechnology grant was made possible with a DuPont Pioneer Science Education grant awarded to the Ohio Soybean Council Foundation in support of ongoing efforts to incorporate ag biotechnology into school curriculums,” said Randy Minton, DuPont Pioneer business director. “Ag biotechnology will continue to play an important role in meeting global food demands and we are honored to support this funding that will help prepare our future workforce.”
“The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation is proud to be a part of this program,” said John Motter, Ohio Soybean Council Foundation chairman and soybean farmer from Hancock County. “It’s important for students to study biotechnology and the role it plays in growing safe, healthy food for everyone, while helping farmers take great care of the environment. It also shows them just how many different opportunities for careers there are in agriculture.”
The purpose of the meeting is to explain the financial aid forms that are necessary for students planning to attend a four or two year college. The process for applying for financial aid can be confusing. The guidance office at Logan High School hopes to assist with this process.<break>

MorraLee Keller will be the featured speaker. MorraLee works for the Ohio College Access Network. She will explain to parents and students how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and answer any particular individual questions. Colleges require the FAFSA in order to determine qualifications for grants, loans and student aid.

Parents and students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA on-line. The advantages to completing the FAFSA on-line are that one receives more immediate feedback from the government and it catches errors as the form is completed. If one chooses to apply on-line, the website is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Step by step directions will appear.

Students planning to attend Hocking College must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is used to determine the amount of money a student will receive for Hocking College District Scholars Program.

The evening will provide many answers to the questions: How do I pay for my child's post-secondary education. How do I apply for financial assistance? Also, local scholarships and Brighten Your Future information will also be available at this meeting.

The State of Ohio, under Senate Bill 140 and House Bill 215, enables high schools and institutions of higher learning to cooperate in offering high school students the opportunity to enroll in college level coursework prior to graduation from high school. The purpose of the post-secondary program is to provide supplemental educational opportunities to intellectually and socially mature students. The program is intended to complement rather than to replace the high school preparatory curriculum.

The post-secondary program will enable qualified students to broaden their curriculum choices. Students and parents may also see this as an opportunity to acquire college credits early, as there are no tuition costs or book costs charged to the students. The program is intended to compliment rather than replace the high school college preparatory curriculum.

The law requires that the student and parent/guardian be counseled and sign a form to indicate the intent to participate. Intent forms will be provided at Tuesday’s meeting and students and parents will have the opportunity to ask questions about the program.

For your information, Hocking College requires that students have a 3.0 grade point average in order to participate; Ohio University Lancaster requires that students are in the top 25% of their class, or have an overall 3.5 grade point average. Ohio University Athens Campus requires that students must have 3.0 grade point average and a 25 ACT, or a 3.5 grade point average and a 20 ACT. Colleges have their own assessment tests that student’s must schedule and pass as part of the requirements. All students are reminded that they have to have passed all 5 parts of the Ohio Graduation Test.

Parents and students are reminded that the Ohio State Department of Education’s rule 3301 states that, “Failure to complete the college course, whether through a formal class drop process or nonattendance other than for reasons generally accepted may result in any or all financial obligations for that course defaulting to the student or his or her parent.” Obviously social maturity remains a critical factor in the success rate of PSEOP students.

Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition

Congratulations to the LHS Visual Arts Department for an outstanding showing at the regional judging for the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition.
LHS senior Abbie Hughes, had two works selected for the exhibition, while Emily Evans, Stephanie Hayden, and Connie Miller, each have one.<break>

“To comprehend the breadth of these four young artist’s accomplishments one must realize that these pieces were selected from a field of over 12,000 entries submitted to 15 regional judging across the state,” Rita Jones, LHS Fine Arts Department chair, explained.

“Out of the regional judging almost 3,000 works emerged for review by seven primary judges at the state competition. Those judges, all college educators, narrowed the field down to the final selection of just 300 works of art,” she observed.”

“Southeastern Ohio Region 15 had only ten pieces selected for the show and half of those six were ours.”

“Mr. McAfee and I are bursting with pride over the successes of our students, we are elated!”

“We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Logan-Hocking community, the LHS staff and our administrators for their continued support of the Arts and for understanding the importance of the art education of our students,” she concluded.

Emily, Abbie, Stephanie and Connie will receive special certificates of recognition on Sunday, April 14 at The Riffe Center, Capitol Theatre in Columbus. Following the awards, The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition will open for viewing at the James A Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Exhibition will remain on display until May 16 with hours weekdays only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
