The Logan-Hocking Middle School MathCounts team, coached by Kelly Wolfe and Stacey Ballenger, both 7th grade math teachers, competed at the regional competition at OU on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Logan was one of five schools that participated in the MathCounts competition. Athens, Saints Peter and Paul, Alexander and South Webster were the other four schools that were represented. Logan's grade 6-8 participants included Ashley Aldridge, Lauren Begley, Sophie Boelk, Arizona Hamm, Levi Keck, Kyndal Nutter, Madachi Roberts, Ian Shields, Isaiah Bookman and Blayke Nutter performed extremely well and brought home several medals. All of the individuals competed in 3 different rounds, consisting of Sprint, Target and Team. Both the Sprint and Target rounds are done individually and then the students are broken down into groups for the Team round. For the final round, called the Countdown round, the top 10 individual performers get to face off to test their quickness and ability. The coaches were extremely proud at this point of the day because within those top 10, Logan secured 5 of the spots. Blayke Nutter came in 9th place, Isaiah Bookman in 8th, Arizona Hamm in 5th, Ashley Aldridge in 4th and Levi Keck in 3rd. Levi went on to claim 2nd place in the Countdown Round. Logan's Levi Keck, Lauren Begley, Arizona Hamm and Blayke Nutter scored enough points to earn 2nd place in the Team Round. Other recognition goes to Levi Keck for earning 2nd place in the Sprint Round and 1st place in the Target Round. The 6th graders, Blayke Nutter and Isaiah Bookman exceeded expectations with their stellar performances. Both Levi Keck, grade 8 and Ashley Aldridge, grade 8 will be able to participate at the state level based on their performances. The state competition takes place on Saturday, March 10th at Columbus State University.
